April 27, 1999

Force Protection Equipment Demonstration

The Joint Staff, in conjunction with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology, and the Army Materiel Command, will host a media day at the Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED) at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Va., on Wednesday, May 5. Vendors from 342 companies will present more than 746 commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) force protection and security products.

Interactive and static displays will be available at the base airfield from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (EDT). Media representatives should enter MCB Quantico at the south gate (Exit 148 on I-95) and proceed to the FPED parking area. Buses will be provided to the airfield demonstration site, and media representatives should proceed to the media center at the airfield. Buses will depart the FPED parking area at 9:30 a.m. to the demonstrations at Range 305 and will return to the airfield and FPED parking area at noon. Buses will again depart the airfield demonstration site at 1 p.m. to view the blast mitigation demonstrations at Range C-Demo and the ballistics protection demonstration at Range 305. The buses will return to the airfield and FPED parking area at 5 p.m. Night demonstrations at the airfield between 8:30 and 10 p.m. will highlight thermal imaging, laser devices and illumination equipment.

The Quantico demonstrations are intended to familiarize commanders and other decision makers with COTS equipment that is either immediately available or can be made available for testing or procurement within 90 days of the demonstration. FPED is open to all Department of Defense military and civilian personnel, members of other federal agencies, state and local law enforcement agencies, and the news media. It is not open to the general public.

FPED is part of an initiative by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to pursue an integrated systems approach to force security. This concept combines awareness training, physical security measures, advanced technology systems, and specific protection measures tailored to specific locations. The initiative began in 1996 when the secretary of Defense directed improvements to force protection. The first equipment demonstration was held at MCB Quantico in September 1997.

A pre-briefing for interested media will be held at the Pentagon Briefing Room, Room 2E781, on Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m. Interested media may register to attend the demonstration at the pre-brief or by calling Lt. Col. Dave Thurston, CJCS Public Affairs, (703) 695-7678, or Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Cooper, OSD Public Affairs, (703) 697-3189.
