A media opportunity about demining activities in Afghanistan, Angola, Bosnia, and Cambodia will be provided by officials of agencies performing demining in those countries.
These representatives have been attending the international Mine Action Center Workshop at Fort Belvoir, Va.
The event will begin at 2:15 p.m. (EST) in the Pentagon Briefing Studio, Room 2E781, immediately following the regularly scheduled Thursday Pentagon Press Briefing.
Conference participants available to answer media questions are:
Afghanistan - Ian Bullpitt, Demining Planning and Operations Manager, U.N. Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA)
Angola - Geir Bjorsvik, Demining Project Coordinator, Norwegian People's Aid (NPA)
Bosnia - Lance Malin, Demining Project Manager, Handicap International (HI)
Cambodia - Lt. Col. "Chip" Bowness, (Canadian Forces), Chief Operations and Technical Adviser, Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC)
The Mine Action Center Workshop is a forum for representatives from national mine action centers and non-governmental organizations to identify and prioritize their most pressing equipment needs.
Requirements identified will guide future U.S. Government demining research and development investments.
The workshop also provides representatives a forum for equipment developers to gain a better appreciation and understanding of operational and environmental conditions confronting indigenous deminers.
