The Department of Defense will conduct two news briefings on
the FY 1998 DoD budget submission. Details of the February 5 and
6, 1997 sessions follow:
Wednesday, February 5, 1997: USE OF ALL MATERIALS AND
COMMENTS PROVIDED ON WEDNESDAY WILL BE EMBARGOED UNTIL THURSDAY,
FEB. 6, 1997 AT 8:00 A.M.
1:00 p.m.: Available budget materials will be handed out in
room 2E781 of the Pentagon.
2:00 p.m.: A Department of Defense official will conduct a
background briefing on the overall budget package. (Attribution
will be to a senior DoD official upon lifting of the embargo.)
This briefing will be held in Room 2E781 of the Pentagon. No
cameras will be allowed; tape recordings will be permitted for
note taking purposes only.
3:30 p.m. approximately: Following the briefing,
representatives of the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the
Military Services will answer questions in designated Pentagon
locations as noted below. Upon lifting of the embargo, these
officials will be attributable as "senior budget officials." No
cameras. Tape recording for note taking only.

Thursday, February 6, 1997:
8:00 a.m.: Embargo is lifted.
1:00 p.m.: Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen will
conduct an on-the-record press briefing in Room 2E781 of the
Pentagon. Cameras and sound recordings are permitted.
On February 5, journalists with White House, State
Department or Capitol Hill credentials will be allowed access to
the Pentagon via the Mall Entrance only. (This entrance is
around the Pentagon Building from the Metro subway station. )
Journalists without this identification, or a Pentagon building
pass, must call 695-0192 or 697-5131 on the house phone for an
escort from the Mall Entrance guard desk.
