Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, U.S. Army, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will depart Andrews Air Force Base on Sunday evening, August 3, for visits to Bosnia and Georgia.
The chairman will travel to Tbilisi, Georgia, on an invitation from President Eduard Shevardnadze and will be hosted by General Lieutenant Vardiko Nadibaidze, the Georgian Minister of Defense.
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, Shalikashvili will meet with host country officials to discuss issues of mutual interest.
That afternoon he will tour Georgia's Unified Military Academy and observe Georgian and U.S. National Guard troops participating in the CORNERSTONE '97 Exercise in Skeneti.
The exercise is in the spirit of a Partnership for Peace combined/joint engineering field training exercise.
U.S. forces (active and state National Guard) are working with the Georgian National Guard forces to conduct repairs and renovations to a children's hospital in Tbilisi and the orphanage in Skeneti.
A press conference will be held at 7 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the American Embassy in Tbilisi.

In Bosnia, Shalikashvili will meet with SFOR commanders and officials in Tuzla and Saravejo on Thursday, Aug. 7.
