Military Commissions Status Update Today

Appointing Authority for the Office of Military Commissions John Altenburg Jr., will brief international and domestic media on the upcoming preliminary hearings for military commissions that begin the week of Aug. 23, 2004.  The briefing will begin at 1:30 p.m. EDT and will be transmitted from the Pentagon briefing room.  Media can also listen to the briefing by calling (703) 697-6340; ask to be connected to the DoD briefing audio.

Preliminary hearings will convene next week at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  These hearings are the first by the United States since the 1940s.  The briefing is on the record and media will have the opportunity to ask questions.  Altenburg is the senior individual in the Office of Military Commissions.  The military commissions process was established by President Bush's military order of Nov. 13, 2001.  Commissions will try individuals accused of violations of the law of war.  A large media pool will report on these preliminary hearings.

Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at the North Parking Entrance only.   Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification.   Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort into the building.
