FAREWELL CEREMONY IN HONOR OF GENERAL JOHN M. SHALIKASHVILI

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen will host a farewell ceremony in honor of Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, U.S. Army, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 1997, on Summerall Field at Fort Myer, Virginia. At the ceremony Gen. Shalikashvili is scheduled to received his fourth award of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. The ceremony will conclude with a joint service pass in review and flyover.

Gen. Shalikashvili has completed over 39 years in uniform. He was appointed the 13th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 25, 1993. He was appointed to a second two-year term in 1995 and has held the position under President Bill Clinton and three Secretaries of Defense: Les Aspin, William Perry and William Cohen.
