The Pentagon's annual visitor record of 130,860, which was set last year, will be broken sometime between 10 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. The individual who breaks the record will be greeted at the tours sign-up window, located on the Pentagon Concourse adjacent to the Metro entrance, and then presented with a Secretary of Defense coin and a Pentagon Tours coin. After that, a special tour of the building in a VIP cart is scheduled.
This record-setting event is open for media coverage. The point of contact for the press is Glenn Flood, (703) 695-6294.
The Pentagon began offering public tours in 1976 as part of the nation's Bicentennial celebration. The tours are provided by volunteers from the five branches of the armed forces' ceremonial units located in the national capital area. The free tours are conducted every half hour, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on federal holidays. The building honored its two millionth visitor in July 1996.
