Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ronald R. Fogleman will announce the contract winner of the Airborne Laser Program Preliminary Design and Risk Reduction Phase, Tuesday, November 12, 1996, at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) in the DoD Studio, room 2E781, Pentagon.

The ABL is designed to destroy theater ballistic missiles in the early phase of flight hundreds of miles away while still over enemy territory. The laser will be mounted in a modified 747 commercial aircraft. The contract awards $1.1 billion to build a prototype Laser Attack aircraft designated YAL-1A.
