No. 064-P:03/03/95:General John M. Shalikashvili, USA, cha
General John M. Shalikashvili, USA, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
will depart Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, on Sunday, March 5, 1995, for
Brazil, Argentina and Chile, with a stopover in Panama on return. During the
South America visit, he will be the guest of his counterparts in Brazil and
Argentina, General Benedito Leonel and Lieutenant General Mario Candido Diaz,
respectively; while in Chile, he will be hosted by the Minister of Defense,
Edmundo Perez Yoma.
The Chairman will meet with senior government leaders in each of the host
countries, and will consult with the U.S. Ambassadors there as well, discussing
a wide-range of regional and bilateral isues. This will be his initial visit
to these countries since becming Chairman. Before returning to Andrews on
March 13, General Shalikashvili will briefly visit Panama for discussions with
General Berry R. McCaffrey, USA, commander-in-chief of United States Southern
Command.
