Twenty reservists from Britain's armed forces will conduct their annual
training alongside their American counterparts in National Guard and Reserve
units from Pennsylvania to California over the next two months.
A contingent of 18 members representing the United Kingdom's Territorial Army,
the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and the Royal Naval Reserve will train in the
U.S. from July 7 through July 21. Two Royal Marine Reserve members will follow
later to conduct their training in August.
The training is part of the Reserve Officer Exchange Program sponsored by the
Department of Defense. It's purpose is to provide National Guard and Reserve
Officers training associated with mobilization duties while giving them a
personal sense of life in the host nation. At the same time, through briefings
and discussions, both nations take the opportunity to address North Atlantic
alliance issues from their perspective. The goal is a reservist better
prepared to deal with his or her mobilization assignment, and a citizen who
returns to the community with a better understanding of the people and policies
of a major alliance partner.
Units of the Army and Air National Guard, the Army and Air Force Reserves, and
the Navy and Marine Corps Reserves, will host their British guests at training
sites in Arkansas, California, Georgia, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas,
Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. Types of
training to which the visitors will be exposed will run the gamut from airlift
to artillery, infantry to engineers, and logistics to communications, to name a
few.
