No. 304-95 October 19, 1995
No.304-P:10/19/95:Secretary of the Air Force Sheila E. Wid

Secretary of the Air Force Sheila E. Widnall will visit the Phillips Laboratory at Kirtland AFB, N.M., Thursday, Oct. 26, to view the potential lethality of Airborne Laser (ABL) technology, a speed-of-light weapon system. Media are invited to accompany Secretary Widnall on her trip.

Enroute to and returning from Kirtland AFB, media will have the opportunity to interview aircrews, visit the flight deck, and film or view an aerial refueling of the transport aircraft, an important component of the Air Force's Global Reach mission.

The Phillips Lab visit will include briefings, displays, a question and answer session with ABL experts, and live-firing of lasers. The Air Force is developing ABL technology to provide protection of joint and allied forces against the increasing threat of theater ballistic missiles.

Media wanting to attend must contact Maj. Felecia Tavares, Air Force Public Affairs, at (703) 695-0640 by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct 23. A limited number of spaces are available on the aircraft. Media will need to arrive at the Andrews AFB, Md. Press Center no later than 7:30 a.m., Oct. 26. Estimated arrival time back in the Washington D.C. area is 1 a.m. Oct. 27.
