Urban Challenge Finishers Displayed at Pentagon

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) hosts the Urban Challenge vehicles in the Pentagon courtyard, April 11 from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. EDT.
The six vehicles that finished the 60-mile urban course will be on display in the Pentagon courtyard. The engineers who developed the vehicle technologies will accompany the vehicles and be available to answer any questions and explain the vehicle technologies. All the vehicles were privately developed by industry and universities.
Urban Challenge was held on Nov. 3, 2007, at the former George Air Force Base in Victorville, Calif. Building on the success of the 2004 and 2005 Grand Challenges, this event required teams to build an autonomous vehicle capable of driving in traffic, performing complex maneuvers such as merging, passing, parking and negotiating intersections. This event was the first time autonomous vehicles have interacted with both manned and unmanned vehicle traffic in an urban environment.  The vehicles had to travel on their own, with no human direction. The vehicles that accomplished this in the fastest time while adhering to California driving regulations were awarded prizes of $2 million, $1 million, and $500,000 for first, second, and third place, respectively.
More information regarding Urban Challenge is available on the DARPA Web site: http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/index.asp .
Additionally, Tony Tether, director, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, will present an Urban Challenge information briefing at noon in the Pentagon Auditorium, Rm. BH 650.
Interested media without access to the Pentagon should contact either Rick Spearman at (571) 218-4472 or Mark Peterson at (571) 218-4575 for a time and place for escort.
