The Military Leadership Diversity Commission will hold its first meeting from 9:25 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., EDT, Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Double Tree Hotel, 300 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, Va. 22202. A second meeting will be held in the same location on the following day, Friday, Sept. 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
The commission, which was established pursuant to the “Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009”, is tasked to conduct a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of policies that provide opportunities for the promotion and advancement of minority members of the armed forces, including minority members who are senior officers.
Addressing the commission on its first day will be Commission Chairman, retired Gen. Lester Lyles; Rep. Elijah Cummings; Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullin; and Gail H. McGinn, performing the duties of the under secretary of defense (personnel and readiness);.
Addressing the commission on its second day will be Clarence Johnson, principal director of the office of diversity management and equal opportunity, followed by diversity briefings on each of the military services and open discussion by the members of the commission.
The commission will operate under the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972, with meetings open to both the public and media. There will not be a question and answer period during either of these two meetings. Please note that the availability of seating is on a first-come basis.
