Defense and Veterans Affairs Secretaries Visit Lovell Federal Health Care Center

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki will tour the Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center on May 21.  The tour will be followed by a media availability at 3:25 p.m. CDT.

All media interested in attending must RSVP by calling 224-610-3132 or 847-418-0702 no later than Sunday, May 20 at 5 p.m. CDT.  The event will be held at the Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (3001 Green Bay Rd., North Chicago, Ill., 60064). Media should enter the gate from Buckley Road and follow the Media Parking signs and must be in place no later than 2:45 p.m.  All media attending must be credentialed.

The Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is the nation’s first fully integrated medical facility between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.  Established on Oct. 1, 2010, the facility integrates all medical care into a federal health care facility with a single combined VA and Navy mission, serving military members, veterans, military family members and retirees.

In the three years since President Obama announced the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER) initiative -- a groundbreaking vision for the future of electronic health data sharing -- the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs have taken important steps to expand information sharing and eliminate gaps between their health and administrative systems.  A key component of this effort is the Integrated Electronic Health Record (iEHR), which will create a single, jointly-created common health record for all DoD and VA medical facilities that, when completed, will be the nation’s single largest health record system.

The press conference will also be broadcast on the Pentagon Channel and online at http://www.defense.gov and http://www.pentagonchannel.mil .
