Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel will host an honor cordon to welcome the presidents of Sierra Leone, Senegal, Malawi, and the prime minister of Cape Verde to the Pentagon Thursday at 9:45 a.m. EDT. The event will be held on the steps of the Pentagon River Entrance. Sierra Leone's President Bai Koroma, Senegal's President Macky Sall, Malawi's President Joyce Banda and Cape Verde's Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves are in Washington, D.C., for several days of events.
Secretary Hagel welcomes the opportunity to meet with these African leaders and appreciates their partnership in addressing regional security challenges. The group is meeting at the Pentagon to discuss shared priorities in countering terrorism, combating transnational threats, and enhancing maritime security. While in Washington, they will also meet with President Obama and other U.S. officials, and will participate in additional events focusing on economic development, trade, and consolidating democratic gains in Africa.
