The Department of Defense will host the fourth in a series of roundtables on educational issues facing military children on May 14 and 15 at the West Coast Olympia Hotel in Olympia, Wash.
Guest speakers include Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Management Policy Charles S. Abell, Washington State Lt. Gov. Brad Owen and Andrew Griffin, assistant superintendent for learning and teaching, Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The Washington State Roundtable will provide an opportunity for installation commanders, military families, school officials and elected officials to meet with senior leaders from the Department of Defense to explore issues of mutual concern and consider potential solutions.
The Educational Opportunities Directorate, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy, sponsors the roundtables in states with a significant military presence. Previous roundtables have been held in Texas, Georgia and California.
The meetings are part of a national strategy to improve the education of military children. The roundtables are intended to identify the unique challenges faced by children of military families as they transition from school to school. It is also intended to promote solution-oriented partnerships between military installations and surrounding school districts.
