The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) recently coordinated with the FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency to complete its largest-ever relief mission after Typhoon Soudelor plowed through Saipan, the most populated island in the Northern Mariana Islands, August 2-3 and left more than 50,000 people without electricity or water. In a joint effort, the #DoD and its assets moved quickly to assist with disaster relief mission, ensuring the islanders in the region had water and food until they were self-sustaining.

Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs) are designed to assault any shoreline from the well decks of U.S. Navy assault ships. AAVs are highly mobile, tracked armored amphibious vehicles that transport U.S. Marine Corps and cargo to and through hostile territory. They took their seats around the long tables in Secretary of Defense Ash Carter's conference room — 23 men and women, civilians, leaders in their fields of business, academia, city government, screenwriting and filmmaking. They sipped coffee and waited for the briefings, by some of Carter’s most senior military and policy advisers, to begin.This was the first morning of a weeklong immersion into the workings of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. armed forces, at the invitation of Dr. Ash Carter himself. The occasion was the 85th running of the Secretary of Defense Senior Leader Engagement Program, or SLEP. #DoD101
