Violet Hill Women's Army Corps Second Officer Violet Hill poses after graduating from the first Women's Army Auxiliary Corps officer candidate school class at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in August 1942. African-American women were allotted 40 slots in that first class, and they had to be well-educated and have professional experience. Later in the war, Hill served as a captain and commander of Company D, 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.
