Defense Secretary Ash Carter spoke with Italian Minister of Defense Roberta Pinotti by phone today about Italy’s contributions to the effort to counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Pentagon press secretary said.

In a readout of the call, Peter Cook noted that the defense leaders last met in October, when Carter traveled to Rome to meet with Italian leaders ahead of the NATO Defense Ministerial and to Sigonella Naval Air Station to visit U.S. personnel stationed there.

Carter thanked Pinotti for Italy's valuable contributions to the counter-ISIL campaign, Cook said, “including Italy's recent decision to deploy additional troops inside Iraq. They also discussed next steps on security cooperation in Libya following recent progress on the political track.”

The two defense leaders agreed to continue their in-depth dialogue on counterterrorism and other defense issues, Cook added.
