WASHINGTON, May 27, 2013 – Before his appearance last night at the National Memorial Day Concert on the Capitol steps, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stood before symbols and monuments representing the nation’s freedom to remember military members who have risked all for it.

With a backdrop featuring the Washington Monument and Capitol Hill, Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey also noted in a video message the significance of nearby Arlington National Cemetery.

“That’s a stark and important reminder of the sacrifices of the men and women who have given their lives for our country and for our way of life throughout our history,” Dempsey said.

The general expressed pride in the military members who serve around the world for the armed forces.

“We will live up to the legacy of those who have gone before us,” Dempsey said. “I hope you enjoy a peaceful, but an importantly thoughtful, Memorial Day.”
