American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2013 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel today called Philippines National Defense Secretary Voltaire Tuvera Gazmin to convey his condolences to the people of the Philippines and discuss the United States' support for the Philippine government in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, according to Assistant DOD Press Secretary Carl Woog.

Minister Gazmin thanked the United States for critical contributions from the Department of Defense and other U.S. agencies that have responded in this time of crisis, Woog said.

By working together, Woog said, the United States and the Philippines government have been able to save lives. Close coordination and rapid response to each nation's requests, he said, have enabled swift access to some of the worst-hit areas.

Secretary Hagel conveyed that the U.S. military will continue to support its ally in this critical time, Woog said.
