Four Marines Killed; Five Suspected Insurgents Detained

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2005 – A day after Iraq's first free election in 50 years passed with success, military officials reported that four Marines have been killed in action.

Three Marines were killed and two others were wounded today while conducting security and stability operations in northern Babil province. Military officials in Baghdad also reported today that a Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed Jan. 30 while conducting security and stability operations in Anbar province.

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, and no report was available on the injured Marines' condition.

Meanwhile, five people were detained Jan. 30 after being suspected of planning attacks on voters near a polling site.

Soldiers from 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), detained three suspected insurgents south of Mosul. Two more suspects were arrested in the western part of the city the same day.
