U.S., Iraqi Forces Take Insurgents off Streets, Defuse Roadside Bombs

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29, 2005 – After being shot at while patrolling in the Mosul, Iraq, area, soldiers of the 2nd Squadron, 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment tracked down and detained six people suspected of being involved in the attack.

They also confiscated weapons and documents.

A Task Force Baghdad soldier was killed today by an improvised explosive device in western Baghdad. The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, and officials had few other details of the attack.

More insurgents were taken off Iraq's streets today when members of the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) detained 10 people in northern Iraq.

The combat team also detained eight people suspected of anti-Iraqi activity, while conducting a raid south of Mosul.

While conducting cordon-and-search operations in the Saliy Al Noor Mosque in southeastern Mosul, Iraqi intervention forces detained two individuals suspected of anti-Iraqi activity. They also confiscated weapons from the individuals.

Military officials said the Ninewa province and the Mosul area are becoming safer with each seizure and removal of dangerous weapons and detention of anti- Iraqi insurgents. Since Jan. 5, U.S. and Iraqi forces have detained 341 individuals and confiscated numerous weapons and munitions.

Two men suspected of plotting attacks against polling centers in the western Baghdad district of Mansour were detained today by members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, military officials said.

The men were detained at a checkpoint where their names were matched to a list of suspects. They're being held for further questioning.

Members of the Stryker Brigade Combat Team were able to defuse a roadside bomb following a tip from an Iraqi citizen who reported it to the Joint Coordination Center in northern Iraq Jan. 28.

The combat team had defused another roadside bomb four days earlier, following a tip from an Iraqi citizen in the same area of northeastern Mosul, according to a Task Force Freedom Multinational Brigade Northwest spokesman.

An improvised explosive device was discovered by Task Force Baghdad soldiers while they were patrolling in the Iraqi capitol today. The device was uncovered in western Baghdad about 7:50 a.m. by a patrol of soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

After securing the area, the soldiers destroyed the device with a controlled detonation about 11:22 a.m. local time.
