WASHINGTON, Dec. 11, 2003 The public's response to the American Red Cross "Treasures for Troops" program has been overwhelming, Gwynn Schneider, associate with Armed Forces Emergency Services, Headquarters ARC, said here Dec. 10.
Although Treasures for Troops is not a holiday program, Red Cross officials said they are committed to having the first 10,000 packages reach deployed service members during December. If public donations exceed 10,000 packages, officials said, the additional kits may not reach the troops during December, but will be distributed as soon as they reach the AFES deployed staff. To ensure security, product consistency and timely overseas shipping, Red Cross officials said they are using a third-party vendor.
The packages contain a deck of cards, a book of crossword puzzles, snacks, games, suntan lotion, tissues, a hacky sack ball, moist towelettes, a hand-held fan and a multipurpose tool packaged in a lightweight, durable, reusable travel bag. Each bag also has an acknowledgement card that the gift is made possible through the generosity of the American people.
The cost for each package is $20. However, ARC chapters and stations may accept donations of any monetary value. For more information, contact your local Red Cross office.
