DLA Accepting Holiday Donations for Joint Endeavor Troops

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 1996 – The Defense Logistics Agency is accepting bulk donations from civic and commercial organizations for U. S. troops serving in Bosnia during the coming holiday season.

The agency mission is to provide essential operational and life support items to U.S. forces. However, officials at the agency's Fort Belvoir, Va., headquarters said the logistics pipeline to Operation Joint Endeavor troops can also handle donated items on a space-available basis.

All bulk donations must receive agency approval before donors can ship to DoD facilities overseas. Donors must call the agency's toll-free number -- (800) 841-0937 -- for donation approval and specific instructions on packing, marking and shipping donations. Once approved, donors are responsible for delivering their items to the designated DoD facilities no later than Dec. 6. DoD will then ship the donations to Joint Endeavor troops at government expense.

The agency donation office will provide potential donors with a list of suggested and most popular items as well as those that are unacceptable. Prohibited items include firearms, alcoholic beverages, combustibles, pornographic materials, perishable foods, glass and breakable containers, home-baked products, books, newspapers and magazines.

Officials emphasize donations cannot go to specific individuals, units or locations through military channels. However, groups may send specifically addressed donations directly, using their own shipping agents.

DoD will not track donations, and agency officials said they cannot provide information regarding donation recipients. However, officials said, if a donation does not travel to the Bosnia region, it will go to U.S. military personnel serving elsewhere.

DoD may also accept monetary donations for DoD use. Agency officials said those wishing to make a financial contribution should contact the Defense Finance and Accounting Service at (703) 607-0918 for further details.
