Estes to Replace Ashy as Commander, U.S. Space Command

WASHINGTON, June 21, 1996 President Clinton nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Howell M. Estes III for appointment to general with assignment as commander of U.S. Space Command at Peterson
Estes, 54, is currently director for operations, Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington. In taking command of the U.S. Space Command, Estes will also become commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, commander of the Air Force Space Command and DoD's manager for space transportation contingency support operations. All commands are at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.
Estes will succeed Air Force Gen. Joseph W. Ashy, who is retiring.
