Acquisition Reform Week Planned March 17-21

WASHINGTON, Mar. 10, 1997 Defense Secretary William S. Cohen has proclaimed March 17-21 as Acquisition Reform Week throughout the Defense Department.
The theme for the week is "Sustaining the Momentum." Undersecretary for Acquisition and Technology Paul G. Kaminski will join Cohen at the Pentagon kickoff March 17.
Cohen said DoD must continue acquisition reform, because the money saved goes straight to DoD modernization, one of his most pressing concerns. He said the $45 billion modernization account in the president's proposed fiscal 1998 budget must climb to $60 billion by fiscal 2002 to keep U.S. forces the best-equipped in the world. Much of this money must come through acquisition reform.
The purpose of the week is to point out DoD's past successes and to focus on the challenges ahead. Cohen and Kaminski want local commanders to note the week and highlight local successes of acquisition reform.
