WASHINGTON, Sept. 24, 1996 – Army tennis players chalked up 22 wins in 30 matches to win team honors at the 1996 armed forces tennis championships, held Sept. 12-18 at Fort Eustis, Va.

The tournament was an Army invitational with the top finishers going to the Consiel du Sport Militaire in Moscow Nov. 10-19.

Teams played head-to-head during the first three days of the competition, with 15 matches in five categories to compile a team score. In singles play, competition consisted of four men's open matches, two women's open, two men's junior veterans (ages 35-45) and two men's seniors (ages 45 and above).

Doubles competition included two men's open matches and one doubles match in the women's, junior veterans and seniors categories.

Army (2-0) took 12 of 15 matches against Navy in its 12-3 victory Sept. 13. It defeated Air Force 10-5 the following day to clinch the team title. Air Force (1-1) finished second, sweeping Navy (0-2) 15-0 in their head-to-head competition Sept. 12. The Marine Corps did not compete.

Players winning four matches included Army 2nd Lt. Kristin Argus (women's singles and doubles) and Spc. Jeffrey Wood (men's open singles and doubles) -- both from Fort Hood, Texas. Argus defeated Air Force's Capt. Kim Green (U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo.) and Navy Chief Petty Officer Caitlin Root (Norfolk Naval Base, Va.) for her singles wins. She then teamed with two different partners in winning a pair of doubles matches.

Wood had no problems with Navy Petty Officer James Lowes (Norfolk), but needed three sets to defeat Air Force 2nd Lt. James Thrulby (Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass.). He then teamed with Capt. Chris Lowry (Schofield Barracks, Hawaii) for two doubles victories.

Army Lt. Col. Stanley Morris of Heidelberg, Germany, and Air Force Capt. Scott Corby of Warner-Robbins Air Force Base, Ga., also captured four wins each. Corby won twice in men's open singles, then teamed with 2nd Lt. Jerry Ledzinski (Los Angeles Air Force Base) to win a pair of open doubles matches.

Morris, competing in men's senior competition, scored a pair of singles wins, then combined with Master Sgt. Robert Richards (Fort Myer, Va.) for his doubles victories.

Taking three wins in the team competition were Ledzinski, Air Force 1st Lt. Bruce Ybarra of Andrews Air Force Base, Md.,  Army 1st Lt. James Malakoff of Fort Hood and Army Sgt. Robert Beckvall of Fort Carson, Colo.

The armed forces tennis championships continued Sept. 15-18 at Fort Eustis with individual singles and doubles competition.
