Thanksgiving Day Message From the President

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26, 1996 – When the Pilgrims gathered to celebrate the first Thanksgiving, they had much for which to give thanks.

They were building a new community in a New World. They had survived a tough New England winter and had prospered during the spring, summer, and fall. With help from local Indians, they had a bountiful harvest that promised to ease their way through the coming winter. The Pilgrims were also thankful for intangible benefits such as the freedom to worship as they pleased.

On this Thanksgiving we share many of the same blessings. We are thankful for the material wealth of this great land and we are grateful for the liberties we continue to enjoy today. These freedoms did not come without great sacrifice. For generations, our men and women in uniform fought to secure preserve them for their loved ones and future Americans.

I salute all of you for advancing this extraordinary tradition of service and for upholding the precious ideals of democracy. America's birthright could be in no better hands than yours. On behalf of a grateful nation, Hillary and I wish you and your loved ones a happy Thanksgiving.

Bill Clinton
