YMCA Poster Contest Springs Forth With July 16 Deadline
Special to American Forces Press Service
SPRINGFIELD, Va., Feb. 18, 1999 Contest entry deadline is July 16 for the 1999 Armed Services YMCA poster contest for elementary school children of military families.
This year's contest theme is "My Military Family." Held in the fall in past years, the contest was moved to the spring after teachers and others asked that students be given more time to enter, ASYMCA officials said.
The winners, one from each of the five military services, will receive $500 U.S. Savings Bonds and have their art published on the Internet. One of the five winning works will also be named the 1999 Military Family Week poster, to be displayed Nov. 21-28 on military installations. A second-place finisher from each service will win a $100 bond. Other runners-up will also receive prizes.
The contest is open to elementary school children of all active and reserve military families. Entries should be in color on unlined, white, letter-sized paper.
Children may enter more than once, but each entry must include the child's name, age, grade level and home address; the parents' full names and military unit; and a telephone number. Families due to move should include information on the receiving command, to ensure a winning child can be notified.
Entries may be forwarded through an Armed Services YMCA branch, through any agency on the installation or by parents directly, but must arrive at Armed Services YMCA National Headquarters, 6225 Brandon Ave., Suite 215, Springfield, VA 22150-2510, by July 16.
The Armed Services YMCA also is sponsoring a children's essay contest in military communities.
Full details on the poster and essay contests are posted on the Armed Services YMCA Web site, www.asymca.org.
