Commissaries Open More Shopping Days

FORT LEE, Va., Feb. 12, 1999 – Selected commissaries plan by March 1 to give shoppers more aisle time either by opening daily or reducing the times they close three straight days for federal holidays.

Defense Commissary Agency officials said they were able to increase operating days at more than 130 stores because of savings realized in grocery transportation costs. Officials chose stores based on such factors as their capacity, normal crowding and accessibility to shoppers on holidays and weekends.

Stores going daily already operate six days a week.

Agency officials said they have no specifics on stores that will reduce the number of times they close three straight days during federal holiday periods. They said agency headquarters told regions to add about six or seven operating days at chosen stores, but didn't specify dates -- shoppers should check their stores for local details.

Army Sgt. Maj. Clevola H. Fedak, senior enlisted adviser to the agency director, hailed the announcement. Part of her job is to visit installations regularly and collect shoppers' comments. More shopping hours, she said, is the top request she hears.

"Service members and their spouses told me commissary operating hours were not tailored to the needs of the military community, especially when there's a federal holiday involved," Fedak said. "This decision clearly represents DeCA's commitment to the needs of our shoppers."
