YMCA Extends Deadline for Reading Contest
The Armed Services YMCA has extended the deadline for its Young Readers Project contest to accommodate requests from local installation libraries. In addition, the U. S. Savings bond prizes for younger students has been increased to $500.
The deadline for submission of essays by students is Wednesday, April 30, 1997. Originally, it was in late March, but a number of installations requested extra time to ensure families in their communities got the word.
The YMCA sent packets of materials about the contest to installation libraries and Department of Defense Education Activity schools worldwide early in March. The packets contain colorful posters, flyers with contest information that can be reproduced for students and age-appropriate certificates that can be used in reading programs in military communities.
The winning high school student will receive a $1,000 U. S. Savings Bond, with the three $500 bonds going to younger students. Students should submit their essays on the subject of reading to the Armed Services YMCA at asymca@erols.com.
