WASHINGTON, Aug. 8, 2001 Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld will host a town hall meeting at 11 a.m. Aug. 9 in the Pentagon auditorium.
Rumsfeld will field questions from service members and civilian employees in the Pentagon and around the world. The three service secretaries, commandant of the Marine Corps, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Washington Headquarters Service were each given about 40 invitations and asked to distribute them to a military and civilian cross section of their staffs.
The Pentagon audience will have a chance to ask the secretary questions directly, but questions from the field are being accepted via e-mail now at firstname.lastname@example.org. Special fax lines will open Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. Eastern time to accept questions as well. The fax numbers will be (703) 695-5486 and (703) 693-8920, or DSN 225-5486 and 223-8920.
The town hall meeting will be broadcast live via streaming audio on DefenseLINK, www.defenselink.mil. The American Forces Radio and Television Service will telecast the event live via satellite to installations overseas and on the Pentagon Channel in the Pentagon.
Many stateside military installations will carry the meeting on their base cable system commander's access channel. Viewers are advised to check their local station schedules for further information. Persons with access to Ku-band satellites can view the event on the GE-2 satellite located at 85 degrees west Transponder 9 (downlink frequency: 11880[V]).
Officials said the town hall meeting has been in the planning stages since Rumsfeld became secretary. Through events like town hall meetings, the secretary intends to find out what's on his troops' minds and to help them understand what's on his mind, a spokesman said.
