DoD Celebrates Public Service Recognition Week

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 2, 2000 – "Let the public service be a proud and lively career," President Kennedy once said, and each year the nation honors those who heed the call to that proud and lively career with Public Service Recognition Week activities. DoD will participate in this year's observance, May 1-7, with displays on the National Mall here and events at military bases around the world.

Public Service Recognition Week honors government employees at all levels, federal, state and local. It is endorsed by the president's Interagency Council on Administrative Management and sponsored by the Public Employees Roundtable. This is the 12th year DoD has participated in the event, held during the first full week of May.

Defense agencies, the services and numerous other public service organizations will have displays that open to the public at noon May 4 on the National Mall. The exhibit area is bounded by 4th and 7th streets and Madison and Jefferson drives. Exhibition hours will be from 1 to 5 p.m. May 4; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 5; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7.

In 1999, an estimated 90,000 people visited DoD exhibits during Public Service Recognition Week, a DoD official said.

"The dedicated men and women working in local, state, and federal government strive each day to create a brighter future for our nation and for their fellow Americans," President Clinton said in a prepared statement. "During Public Service Recognition Week, I am proud to salute our nation's public employees for their unwavering commitment to fulfilling America's bright promise for all our citizens, and I thank them for their many contributions to improving the quality of our national life."
