Workers with Disabilities Recognized in Pentagon Ceremony

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12, 2000 – Eighteen individuals were recognized in a Pentagon ceremony Oct. 11 as Outstanding DoD Employees with Disabilities.

The annual ceremony is intended to increase awareness of the valuable contributions to national security made by persons with mental and physical disabilities, according to the program's organizers.

"Americans with disabilities bring skill and creativity to our workforce. Our nation is stronger and more secure because of their dedication and leadership in vital occupations within the Department of Defense," Defense Secretary William Cohen said in a prepared statement for the ceremony. "Their extraordinary accomplishments show the importance of broadening the circle of inclusion in the workplace."

The award program began in 1981. Honored individuals are selected by their organizations. The 18 award winners this year are:

o Teresa A. Bratcher, training specialist, Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, San Diego, Navy.

o Peter H. Brown, program analyst, Information Systems Directorate, Office of the Inspector General, DoD.

o Gretchen M. Buehler, visual information specialist, Fort McCoy, Wis., Army.

o May Ling Casillas, investigative assistant, Dallas Field Office, Central Region, Irving, Texas, Defense Security Service.

o Penny L. DeFino, Unix system administrator, Defense Enterprise Computing Center-Detachment, Defense Information Systems Agency, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.

o Robert Dyson, management analyst, Defense Contract Management Agency, Manassas, Va.

o Herbert Finkler, supervisory accountant, Defense Finance and Accounting Service-Europe, Vogelweh, Germany.

o Kristine I. Groenenboom, human resources manager, Army and Air Force Exchange Service, Fort Gordon, Ga.

o Harry P. McWee, computer scientist, Computer Resources Services Center, National Security Agency, Arlington, Va.

o Susan L. Kunz, assistant base visual information manager, Headquarters, Air Mobility Command, Air Force, Belleville, Ill.

o Denise P. Michel, personnel management specialist, Human Resource Services Center, Office of the Secretary of Defense/Washington Headquarters Service, Alexandria, Va.

o Nancy O'Hanlon, assistant general counsel, Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington.
