American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23, 2009 – Iraqi security forces discovered improvised explosive devices and arrested four suspected criminals in Baghdad in recent days, military officials reported.

Police officers, working with “Sons of Iraq” civilian security group members, discovered a homemade bomb during a combined patrol yesterday in the Aamel neighborhood of southern Baghdad’s Rashid district. An Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal team responded to safely remove the bomb, which consisted of a grenade and military-grade explosives.

Elsewhere, Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers discovered an IED in northwestern Baghdad Feb. 21.

Iraqi soldiers reported to their coalition partners that they had discovered an IED in Baghdad’s Mansour district. U.S. soldiers immediately responded to help cordon off the area and ensure there were no secondary devices. An Iraqi army EOD team responded to the site and disarmed the device.

On Feb. 20, Iraqi security forces working in the Yarmouk area of northwestern Baghdad arrested four people suspected of placing magnetic explosives on vehicles. The detainees were transported to a nearby headquarters for processing.
