Iraqi Forces Target al-Qaida in Mosul, Baghdad

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2010 – Iraqi security forces killed seven al-Qaida in Iraq members and captured three others during June 5 security operations in northern Iraq.

In east Mosul, Iraqi forces accompanied by U.S. advisors interdicted a vehicle to arrest a suspected senior al-Qaida in Iraq leader believed responsible for recruiting foreign fighters and organizing terrorist operations in southern Mosul.

As the security team approached the vehicle, the warranted man and his passengers presented a threat to the security forces, which then fired and killed three men, including the wanted al-Qaida leader.

Also on June 5, Iraqi forces killed four suspected al-Qaida in Iraq members and arrested three suspected criminal associates during a combined operation south of Mosul. The forces searched multiple buildings for a suspected senior al-Qaida leader involved in vehicle-borne explosive attacks and roadside bombings on civilians, as well as Iraqi and coalition forces.

As the team approached the building in which the suspect was believed to be located, occupants lobbed grenades and fired automatic weapons at the forces. The Iraqi security forces returned fire, killing four.

Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest three suspected al-Qaida associates.

On June 4, Iraqi security forces arrested three suspected al-Qaida in Iraq criminal associates during a combined operation in Baghdad. The forces searched several buildings for an al-Qaida member suspected in IED attacks.

The man is wanted in a warrant for trafficking al-Qaida fighters. Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest three criminal associates.

In June 3 Iraq operations:

- Iraqi forces arrested a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member during a combined operation in west Mosul. Iraq forces accompanied by U.S. advisors conducted a vehicle stop to apprehend the suspected AQI member with ties to al-Qaida leaders in the Mosul area. Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest the warranted man.

- Iraqi forces arrested a suspected Jaysh al-Mahdi member during a combined operation in southern Baghdad. The suspect allegedly conducted numerous attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces, including the assassination of an Iraqi soldier. The suspect also is believed to be responsible for weapons trafficking and several indirect-fire attacks against Joint Security Station Zafariniyah and Forward Operating Base Rustamiyah. Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest the suspect.

- Iraqi forces arrested three suspected al-Qaida in Iraq criminal associates during an operation in western Mosul. Iraqi forces accompanied by U.S. advisors searched a building for the man who is believed to acquire vehicles and weapons used to carry out assassinations in Mosul. The suspect also is believed to have close ties to senior al-Qaida in Iraq leaders.
