Proliferation Security Initiative

The Proliferation Security Initiative is a global effort to stop trafficking of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems and related materials to and from actors of proliferation concern. U.S. involvement stems from a national strategy which recognizes the need for more robust tools to stop proliferation and identifies interdiction as an area of greater focus.

Interdiction Principles

Take effective steps, whether alone or with other states, to interdict the transfer or transport of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems and related materials to and from actors of proliferation concern.

Adopt procedures for rapid information exchange concerning suspected proliferation activity, protecting the confidentiality of classified information provided as part of the initiative, dedicate appropriate resources and efforts to interdiction operations and capabilities, and maximize coordination among participants in interdiction efforts.

Strengthen relevant national legal authorities where necessary to accomplish objectives, and when necessary, relevant international law and frameworks in appropriate ways to support commitments.

Take specific actions in support of interdiction efforts regarding cargoes of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems, or related materials to the extent that national legal authorities permit, and consistent with obligations under international law and frameworks.
