Space Posture Review
The Space Posture Review (SPR) is a legislatively-mandated review of U.S. national security space policy and objectives, conducted jointly by the Secretary of Defense and the Director of National Intelligence. The Department of Defense and Intelligence Community have concluded the SPR by releasing a National Security Space Strategy.

Space Posture Review Key Points & Facts

  • The Space Posture Review (SPR) was legislatively-mandated by the FY09 National Defense Authorization Act. It required:
    • The definition, policy, requirements, and objectives for space situational awareness, space control, space superiority, force enhancement and force application, space-based intelligence and surveillance and reconnaissance from space, integration of space and ground control and user equipment, and any other matter the Secretary considers relevant to understanding the space posture of the United States;
    • A description of current and planned space acquisition programs and future space systems and technology development;
    • An assessment of the relationship among military space policy, national security space policy, national security space objectives, arms control policy, export control policy, and industrial base policy; and
    • An assessment of the effect of the military and national security space policy of the United States on the proliferation of weapons capable of targeting objects in space or objects on Earth from space.
  • Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community submitted an interim Space Posture Review report to Congress in March 2010. The interim report contained the descriptions and assessments required by Congress, but delayed review of overarching national security space policy and objectives until after the release of the National Space Policy in June 2010.
  • The National Security Space Strategy concludes the Space Posture Review by providing strategic objectives and approaches for national security space.
