Resumption of Elective Surgery

Recently, the department updated the policy on elective surgeries and procedures. This policy aligns the resumption of elective procedures with the department's health protection condition (HPCON) framework and the administration’s Opening Up America Again plan. The policy instructs military medical and dental treatment facility (MTF and DTF) directors and commanders to consider a number of factors before resuming elective procedures. These factors include:

  • Installation Health Protection Condition (HPCON)
  • Healthcare capacity, including TRICARE network capacity
  • MTF and DTF staffing
  • Individual personal protective equipment availability
  • COVID-19 testing availability for DoD patients and staff
