Coffee spent seven years and nine days as a prisoner of war in a prison known as the "Hanoi Hilton." He was the pilot of a RA5-C Vigilante reconnaissance aircraft on a mission to gather intelligence over a heavily defended portion of North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down Feb. 3, 1966.
