Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security, Sherri W. Goodman, and Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Deputy Director, Susan Haley, presented awards today at the second annual joint service pollution prevention conference in San Antonio, Texas, to four firms for their outstanding performance records in the Department of Defense environmental cleanup program.
The small businesses honored were: Laguna Construction Company, Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M., BRAL Environmental Services, Inc. of Kansas City, Mo., and Bhate, Inc. of Birmingham, Ala. A prime contractor, International Technology Corporation of Monroeville, Pa., was also recognized for their extensive outreach efforts to small businesses seeking subcontracting opportunities in the Defense Department's environmental restoration program.
"The firms we honor today have made a significant contribution to making American communities cleaner and safer. These small businesses exemplify the commitment and ingenuity required to successfully compete in the today's environmental business sector. I applaud their innovative work," said Goodman.
The DoD is responsible for the management of hundreds of military installations and other defense sites throughout the United States and overseas. In 1984, Congress established the Defense Environmental Restoration Account to fund cleanups on active bases in the United States. Small businesses have played a significant role in the Department's environmental cleanup program because of the expertise they bring to the restoration process.
