Release No: 102-98
March 08, 1998

Pentagon Defense Protective Service (DPS) officers found an unidentified man with a gunshot wound lying on Boundary Channel Drive near the River entrance guard gate yesterday at about 6 p.m. The unidentified man was unconscious and was medi-evacuated by Med-Star helicopter to Washington Hospital Center where he was declared dead.

A passerby notified DPS that the man was lying in the road. The man was black and appeared to be 30-40 years old. He was not believed to be an employee of the Pentagon and is presumed to be homeless. CPR was provided to the man at the scene.

Pentagon officials subsequently learned that one of the Pentagon security guard's weapon had been discharged. This was learned after interviewing the security guard. It is not clear at this point as to whether this was related to wounding of the unidentified man. The investigation is on-going and the FBI has been called in on the case. Previously the Arlington County police were working with the Pentagon, but they have turned over jurisdiction.
