General John M. Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, will host a ceremony on Monday, September 23, 1996, at
2 p.m. to rededicate the General of the Army Omar N. Bradley
Corridor. The ceremony will held in the Pentagon, E-Ring, just
inside the River Entrance to the Bradley Corridor. Guest
speakers will include General Andrew J. Goodpaster, USA (Ret), Co-
Chair of the Atlantic Council of the United States; and Mr. Andy
Rooney, a commentator for CBS' 60 Minutes.
General Bradley, the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, was appointed to the position by President Harry Truman on
August 16, 1949, and reappointed to a second term in 1951.
General Bradley became a General of the Army on September 22,
1950. The only chairman to attain five star rank. He brought to
the chairmanship a unique background of military and civilian
experience: graduate of the US Military Academy; renowned
tactician; World War II hero; head of the Veterans
Administration; Chief of Staff of the US Army. But, the title he
most revered was that of the GI's General.
Media desiring to cover the event should contact Carolyn
