DEFENSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON WOMEN IN THE SERVICES ANNOUNCES 1996 FALL CONFERENCE
The Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service
(DACOWITS) will conduct their Fall Conference, Oct. 23-27, 1996
at the Oklahoma City Medallion Hotel. Assistant Secretary of
Defense for Force Management and Personnel Fred Pang is hosting
the conference. Pang and other keynote speakers will address the
progress of women in the Services. The National Guard is the
supporting Service. The conference is open to the public.
The committee meets formally each spring and fall to discuss
current issues facing women in the military services. The
DACOWITS is divided into three subcommittees which address issues
relevant to Equality Management, Forces Utilization and
Development, and Quality of Life.
DACOWITS was established in 1951 by Secretary of Defense
George C. Marshall. The Committee was formed to assist and
advise the Secretary of Defense on policies and matters relating
to women in the Military Services. In its advisory capacity, the
Committee recommends measures to ensure the effective utilization
of women in the Armed Forces.
DACOWITS is composed of civilian women and men who have
outstanding reputations in their fields of endeavor. Members are
appointed by the Secretary of Defense for a three year term.
DACOWITS has been instrumental in bringing to fruition an
unprecedented number of opportunities for qualified women to
serve in our armed forces.
