SECOND ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION/SMALL BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENTS NAMED
Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Sherri W. Goodman, and
Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Director, Robert L.
Neal Jr., presented awards today to four firms for their
outstanding performance records in the DoD's environmental
cleanup program.
The small businesses honored were: Omega Environmental
Services, Inc. of Tucker, Ga. and PEER Consultants, Inc., of
Rockville, Md. OHM Remediation Services Corporation of Findlay,
Ohio, was the recipient of a new award added this year to
recognize a prime contractor who has provided ample opportunities
for small businesses and women owned businesses in environmental
restoration for DoD. The award winners were recognized with a
plaque at the HazWaste World Superfund XVII conference in
Washington, D.C.
Small businesses have played a significant role in DoD's
environmental cleanup program because of the expertise small
firms provide to the many challenges associated with restoration
work. Participation in DoD wide programs from small businesses
have continued to rise since 1987. In FY95, small businesses,
small disadvantages businesses, and women-owned businesses
received $25.3 billion or 23% of all DoD contracts.
The Department is responsible for the management of hundreds
of military installations and other defense sites throughout the
United States and overseas. In 1984, Congress established the
Defense Environmental Restoration Account to fund DoD cleanups on
active bases.
