SECRETARY PERRY RECOGNIZES WISCONSIN FIRM AS BEST IN NATION FOR EMPLOYER SUPPORT OF GUARD AND RESERVE

Secretary of Defense William J. Perry recognized a Wisconsin-based transportation company for its outstanding support as an employer of National Guard and Reserve members.

Schneider National, based in Green Bay, received the first ever National "Employer Support Freedom Award" today in ceremonies in the Pentagon Press Room. Four regional awards were also given to the United Parcel Service, Central Florida District, Orlando, Fla.; McDonnell-Douglas Corporation, St. Louis, Mo.; Tektronix Inc., Wilsonville, Ore., and National Life, an insurance company located in Montpelier, Vt.

The award is sponsored by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (NCESGR), a Department of Defense committee that is headquarters to 55 state-level committees nationwide. The state committees are staffed solely by volunteers.

"This Employer Support Freedom Award was established to recognize sacrifices made by employers and to honor those companies who have gone the extra mile to support our Reservists and their families," said Secretary Perry. He was joined in presenting the honor by Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, Deborah R. Lee.

ESGR committees across the nation submitted 26 employers for the award. A national committee reviewed the nominations and chose the five finalists, representing each of the United States' five geographic regions. A grassroots committee of weekend drilling National Guard and Reserve members reviewed the finalists, and identified Schneider National as the most supportive employer.

"This is an outstanding award because it symbolizes the quality of all of our associates and their deep commitment to freedom," said Schneider National President, Don Schneider. "Our associates who serve in the National Guard and Reserve make a tremendous sacrifice during times of national need. We as a company will do everything possible to support these associates and their families."

Schneider employs more than 15,000 associates, approximately 1,000 of them are active in the National Guard and Reserve.
