EUCOM ASSESSMENT TEAM DEPLOYS TO AFRICA
The U.S. military is deploying a team to conduct an
assessment of the humanitarian situation in Central Africa.
This deployment will enhance the military's ability to respond
but does not represent a commitment by the U.S. to deploy other
forces.
The 40-person team includes a broad range of specialists
such as medical, engineering, civil affairs, and security
assistance, and will be led by U.S. Army Major General Edward P.
Smith. General Smith commands the Southern European Task Force
(SETAF), headquartered in Vicenza, Italy.
The team is expected to arrive in the region on Wednesday,
Nov. 13, 1996. The exact itinerary and the duration of the
team's deployment have not been determined.
