The Department of Defense announced today the 2007 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award recipients.
The following employers are being recognized for having provided exceptional support to their employees who are also men and women voluntarily serving in our National Guard and Reserve: Augustine and Sons Inc., of Rose Hill, Iowa; Con-way Inc., of San Mateo, Calif.; Creative Healthcare Solutions of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Custom Hardware Engineering Inc., of Fenton, Mo.; Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group of Tulsa, Okla.; Gantt Excavating & Construction of Martinsburg, W.Va.; General Motors Corp. of Detroit, Mich.; New Hampshire State Police of Concord, N.H.; Nucor Corp. of Charlotte, N.C.; Sierra Pacific Resources of Las Vegas; Sodexho USA of Gaithersburg, Md.; the state of Tennessee; Turbocam of Dover, N.H.; Ultra Machining Co. of Monticello, Minn.; and Wilmington VA Medical Center of Wilmington, Del.
This award publicly recognizes employers representing big business, small business and the public sector, who were nominated by their National Guard and Reserve employees. These service members felt that their employer not only met the requirements of the federal law, but also went well beyond it.
The Freedom Award, which was instituted by former Secretary of Defense William Perry in 1996, will be presented to these organizations during a formal ceremony on Sept. 12, 2007, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.
The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a DoD agency established in 1972. Its mission is to gain and maintain active support from all public and private employers for the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve.
