JOINT STAFF CHAIRMAN PRAISES CAREER OF GEN. GEORGE JOULWAN
Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, has issued the following statement regarding the
announcement by General George A. Joulwan, Supreme Allied
commander, Europe, and commander in chief, United States European
Command, on the announcement of his retirement in the spring of
1997:
All too often, in our fast paced world, we take the coming
and going of people as commonplace.
And while the announcement
today by my friend and fellow soldier, Gen. George Joulwan, of
his retirement this coming spring, comes as no surprise, it is
nonetheless bittersweet.
For over three years, General Joulwan, has lead one of the
most dynamic theaters of operation in the world.
His success in
reshaping and reorganizing NATO's military forces to meet the
demands of a totally new and different European security
environment is clear.
And no commander could be more proud and
satisfied with the proven capabilities and versatility of the men
and women of US European Command.
He will leave behind a
magnificent legacy of leadership and a re-energized NATO force
prepared for the 21st Century.
General Joulwan's career is one of enormous success -- he
has served at every level of command, two combat tours in Vietnam
and Commander in Chief of two Unified Commands.
He is an
extraordinary leader, bringing a sense of direction, wisdom,
confidence and skill in whatever he does.
On behalf of the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and
the men and women of our Nation's military, I send General and
Mrs. Joulwan best wishes as they prepare to retire in the coming
months.
